A mio parere questo libro è notevole per essere stato scritto a fine Ottocento. Questo perché, innanzitutto, è scritto con un linguaggio abbastanza semplice, senza l'uso di termini astrusi e superflui che invece sono spesso e volentieri presenti in altri classici. Inoltre Wells mette su carta situazioni e personaggi così fantasiosi e dettagliati che sembra quasi li abbia visti dal vivo e abbia provato la paura sulla sua stessa pelle. È da sottolineare la crudità del romanzo. In primo luogo per i terribili e dolorosi esperimenti del dottore sugli animali ( se siete sensibili, evitate questo libro ), in secondo luogo per la cattiveria con cui l'autore si scaglia nella critica degli uomini del suo tempo: uomini-bestie che senza leggi e senza la paura di un'entità superiore sono destinati a sbranarsi a vicenda e a distruggersi vicendevolmente.
