OVERVIEW:
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about an experiment that produces a monster. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.
SUMMARY:
Frankenstein is written in the form of a frame story that starts with Captain Robert Walton writing letters to his sister. In his letters, he tells Victor Frankenstein's story, which includes the monster's story. By doing so, Shelley creates a nesting doll effect that allows the readers to see the three characters' perspective of the one larger story.
REVIEWS:
5 Stars Review : Katie Wahlquist - Goodreads
Really a fantastic book. Nothing like what most people think. I'm still wondering how it became such an iconic Halloween story; it's really more sad than scary. In fact, it's really not even scary at all.
5 Stars Review : Caitrin Nordstrom - Goodreads
This book goes far beyond the horror story of a monster. Shelley addresses, among other topics, suffering and the reason for life. It's a truly amazing book, beautiful writing, and far better than any horror movie remake.
5 Stars Review : Sonya Higgd - Goodreads
It has taken me a long time to get round to reading this book. I am very glad I finally have. I found myself feeling sorry for both Victor and the monster who didn't ask to be created. Well worth a read.
5 Stars Review : James - Goodreads
A classic easily dismissed, Frankenstein is actually very sad. From the mad scientific musings of a crazed surgeon, to the emotional and utterly heartbreaking yearning of his creation who he comes to hate, this book left me quite pensive, and feeling incredible pathos for the monster. N.B. Frankenstein is the doctor, 'The Creature' or 'The Monster' is the name for the big hobbling thing that actually is quite sophisticated.
